“Yet, O LORD, you are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.” Isaiah 64:8 (NIV)
I was not raised in the Catholic faith; I was raised in another faith. My dad and all of my brothers are ministers; church and singing has always been a part of my life. Years ago, there was a Southern Gospel group called the Hinsons or The Hinson Family…something like that. The group was made up of, I believe, 3 brothers and 1 sister and they wrote much of their own songs. One of the brothers wrote a song called The Potter and The Clay. Here are the lyrics…as best I can remember them!
Potter And The Clay
Verse: 1
Potter, hear the clay, saying mold me in thy way,
that I may share this love instilled in me,
with skillful hands perform the task, just like thee,
Lords all I ask, and Father, let your spirit breathe on me.
Chorus:
I’m just a hand full of clay, the potter found along the way,
and I’ll never know what Jesus sees in me,
but I won’t try to understand, just be yielded in your hands,
and all I ask, dear Lord, is let me be like thee.
Have you ever seen a potter with their clay? I have not…at least not in person. But look at this. The clay takes shape in the Potter’s hands…that is what I strive for in my life…to LET the POTTER take control, LET the POTTER mold me, LET the POTTER work in my life. Sometimes, I have to ask myself if I am the POTTER or the CLAY. I know what I am SUPPOSED to be, but too often in life I want to take control. I want to be the potter! If you have read this blog very often or know me personally, you know that I like to be in charge, I like to be in control…letting go is very hard for me. So, I pray that I can be more like clay, that I can be more willing to mold to the Lord’s will for my life.
Lord, please help me be more like you. Help me take this journey one day at a time and let you mold me into the person you wish me to be. Thank you for another day to start over and try again…
Blessings and Peace…
Mary,
My husband has a Baptist/Pentecostal background. He converted to Catholicism in 2000.
I, too, ask that I may be more moldable in the hands of our Lord. I enjoyed your post 🙂 Thank you. The lyrics were beautiful.
Thank you! My background is Baptist…I converted in 1990 when my son was 2 years old.
A song my husband and I will learn and take to our church, a small Village Missions Shurch in the viallage we live near…Thanks for sharing. Phillip Keller did a marvelous sermon on the Potter and the clay years ago. It will always be one of my favourite Bible passages and my prayers walk alongside yours 🙂
mold me and make me Lord
When i was a young girl I heard this song and I know there is a second verse but i don't know it. I never forgot the chorus. It is so beautiful. If anyone does i would like to have it. I remember something about a bitter cup but that's all i remember. I remember a family came to our church and the youngest daughter sang this song. I believe the fathers name was Cecil Nash.
Hello, My name is Cyndi. You know, God has impeccable timing. I never cease to be amazed at the things he orchstrates.I have been listening to this song on a CD this afternoon, and just uploaded it to share with a Christian sisterhood fellowship blog group online. I was looking for a printable version of the lyrics( easier than typing them out myself LOL ) and I stumbled on this blog !!! GO GOD : D — So I will happily share all the lyrics with you. My recording is from an old album my cousin's put out on a Bluegrass Gospel album in the late 70's to maybe 1980. We are from South Alabama area. They are called the Turman family, but it was probably a cover of the song. It was very popular back then.
Potter and The Clay
Potter hear the clay, saying mold me in thy way
That I may share this love instilled in me.
With skillful hands perform the task, just like thee Lord is all I ask
and Father let your spirit breathe on me.
Chorus-
I'm just a hand full of clay, the potter found along the way
and I'll never know what Jesus sees in me.
But I won't try to understand, just be yielded in your hands
and all I ask dear Lord is let me be like thee.
Now my trials just hardened me, that others see my faith in Thee
Dear Lord don't let me be away too far
A vessel filled up to the brim, spilling your love all over them
Just like Thee I long to be and Lord that's all.
chorus-
repeat last line of chorus.
That's the whole song.
Thank you so much for the second verse. I couldn’t remember it no matter how much I tried. I used to sing this song in church all the time back in the 80’s as a special. Now I can do it again!
Thanks again,
Phyllis
