On Sunday we heard about stewardship.  About being good stewards.

Good stewards of what we have been given.  Our time.  Our talents. And our treasures.

I took the picture above at the United States Military Academy a few years ago.  Notice how perfectly in line the books are…someone is responsible for that.

Someone makes sure it gets done.

My son spent one year at the United States Air Force Academy.  His time was not his own. If you at one of the United States Military Academies or in the military, then you are probably being told what to do and when to do it.  Soldiers are probably good stewards of their time because they are forced to be – they don’t have a choice.

I have a choice.

The Pharisee’s were good stewards…in one sense.

“Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint,
rue and all other kinds of garden herbs,
but you neglect justice and the love of God.
You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone.
Luke 11:42 (emphasis mine)

The Pharisees missed the point of being good stewards.  They tithed for the wrong reason.

Sometimes in life, I miss the point.  People come for dinner and I worry about having the house in perfect order, the kitchen clean, etc.  I miss the point of enjoying the company.

I only had one child in my home but it was easy to get caught up in hurrying to this or that and missing what was going on in the moment.  Missing the point.

Just like the Pharisees I miss the point.

I am trying to do better at hitting the point…not missing it.

I saw this quote recently…

“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”
Wayne Gretzky

Wayne Gretzky was a hockey player; he took a lot of shots at the goal.  If I don’t aim for the goal I will miss it…in the process, I need to make sure I am aiming for the right goal, so I don’t miss the point.

Are you missing the point?
What goal are you aiming for?
