Where did the time go? Didn’t I just ask this question a few weeks ago? Here it is…mid-July already. I know what happened. Andy’s surgery requires me to be home and around to drive him until his sling comes off and he is cleared to drive. That meant…no June vacation, no weekend trips…ah…the joys of parenting! BUT…I wouldn’t change a thing. Since Andy returned from California in late March I cannot believe how well things have gone here at home. He is much more mature than when he left. He will do anything I ask him to do (or that John asks – for that matter.) He doesn’t quite have the initiative to empty the dishwasher, vacuum, clean toilets, etc. without being asked…but, hey you can’t have EVERYTHING!!
I think maybe God had a plan for my summer. You see, I had this grand plan that included a lot of stuff. Things to do, places to go, people to meet…maybe He wanted me to “be still.” Being around everyday to cart Andy to and from has caused me to slow down. Maybe that was the plan…whatever…I am thankful that life is what it is. (How profound is that?!?)
Back in January or early February, a faculty member where I work asked if would take this plant she had that was dying. She thought it was too warm in her office and maybe I could do something with it. She said it was an orchid. The leaves were VERY limp and it had a long green thing sticking straight up with a dead stick looking thing at the top of the green thing. (I know, really technical terms!) Anyway, I did some research on the care of orchids. Eventually, I began to see a small knot bulging from the stick. After a few weeks, from the knot emerged a stem. When the semester ended I brought the plant home to care for it. Eventually, I had buds.
Then the buds opened…
Isn’t it beautiful?
I would never have dreamed this plant would actually bloom. Kind of like our lives…God can take an almost dying mess and make something beautiful.
Have a great weekend…if you have a minute, please check out my friend’s new blog. I love her and her family.
Peace and blessings…
What a beautiful orchid. You must have a green thumb and didn't know it! Amazing what HE can do with our lives when we get nourishment from our Lord. I've been missing dropping by. Glad to hear your son's recovery is going well.
I love your analogy of our lives and the orchid! So true. Yes, I do think God slows us down sometimes to hear him or to hear others. We live in a "too fast" world. Great post! You should write a devotional book!
Mary, I am so happy that He is blessing you beyond your plans and expectations this summer! Thank you for your always kind and thoughtful words on my blog. They really do make my day when I read them!
Mary,
God's plans often differ from our own but I suspect when we see the "big picture" some day we will be awestruck at what He has done with our lives 🙂 I'm glad to hear that you and your family are doing well, Mary. I think we all need an extra nudge when it comes to cleaning out those toilets (lol). I've yet to hear my husband offer, at least! God bless!
I am enjoying a slower summer, too. And I'm grateful it's given me the time to appreciate God's creation and his work all around me.
And that orchid? A thing of beauty! You have a green thumb for sure, my dear!
